Living in Goulais River & Heyden
Just north of Sault Ste. Marie, Goulais River and Heyden offer room to roam, rolling countryside, and easy access to Lake Superior, while keeping the city close.
About Goulais River & Heyden
If you've been dreaming of more space without giving up a reasonable commute, this stretch of Highway 17 and Highways 552 and 556 to Searchmont is worth a look. Heyden sits just beyond the city limits, with wooded lots and lakefront and country homes only minutes from town. Continue north and you'll reach Goulais River, a close-knit community known for its river, its farms, and its proximity to the sandy shores of Goulais Bay on Lake Superior. To the east via Highway 552 and 556, you will reach Searchmont and Wabos, home of Searchmont Resort, the largest vertical amongst Ontario ski resorts.
Weekends here are made for the outdoors: paddling the river, mountain biking, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing in winter, and quick trips to Searchmont's hills, Stokely Creek’s stunning cross country skiing, or the beaches of Havilland and Harmony Bay. It's a great fit for families who want a yard big enough for everything, and for anyone ready to trade traffic for starry skies. An organized township, with zoning bylaws through Sault North Planning Board, although laxly enforced. Building permits are not required, except for Algoma Health Unit septic permits and ESA electrical inspections.
